Job 23:15-17 – “Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him. For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me: because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.”
Compare the fear and trembling Job describes with the weakness and fear Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 2. Consider why each of them was afraid. Which of their perspectives is closer to your own experience with the Lord? Why? If you are like Job, God is scary because sometimes He does NOT protect you from tragedy. For Paul, the danger is that the Corinthians began to see him as a god, rather than focusing on the source of the power of the gospel. Job knew that his Creator had the right to do whatever He wished with his servant’s heart. Paul wanted nothing but to follow his Savior’s heart. What was the darkness Job encountered, that he thought the Lord might have prevented? Are there any types of troubles or dark times you assume you will never have to endure, because you are confident God will protect you? Did He protect His Son?
