“Aid” is defined as the urgent and temporary provision of emergency assistance to reduce immediate suffering from a natural or man-made crisis. These crises can be environmental factors such as earthquakes, disease, famine or man-made such as economical poverty or human rights violations. Aid is an immediate act imposed to initiate the breaking of a cycle and to attend to a community’s need on the most basic level. There is great need in the world for aid and assistance; however, if we reach no farther than aid, we are only helping one group of people in one area for one moment in time. If the end goal is aid, then the suffering is only delayed and not resolved. In order to move beyond the boundaries of aid into a long-lasting thriving community, there must be restoration.
